Why train your sense of rhythm

A steady click rhythm helps anywhere timing matters: in rhythm games like Beat Saber clones or Taiko-style clickers, in music production with MIDI controllers, and generally anywhere even input beats fast input. Testing your own timing regularly shows quickly whether your sense of time drifts or stays stable.

How the measurement works

The target grid is anchored to your first click, not to an external clock: click one sets the starting point, and from there the test counts forward in fixed steps (500, 200, or 125 ms), comparing every further click with the nearest grid time. From the deviations of all clicks, the test builds the mean absolute deviation (MAD), the value it shows you. The full click sequence goes to the server and gets recomputed there independently before a result reaches the leaderboard.

What counts as a good score

Under 20 ms mean deviation counts as a strong sense of rhythm, barely distinguishable from a metronome. Scores between 20 and 40 ms are solid and realistic for most people without dedicated practice. Beyond that, the rhythm gets noticeably less steady, which happens even to practised clickers at the faster speeds (5 and 8 clicks per second).

Your first click sets where the beat starts. From there, the test builds a target grid at the chosen interval (500, 200, or 125 ms) and compares every further click with the closest grid time. The score shown is the mean of all absolute deviations in milliseconds, lower is better.

The first three seconds give you a way in, after that your own sense of timing takes over. A metronome that stayed on screen the whole run would only measure how well you follow a display, not how steady your own rhythm is, so the test deliberately hides it.

The mean deviation (MAD) shows how far off the beat you were on average. The standard deviation shows how much those deviations vary: a low value means consistently small errors, a high value means a few outliers on an otherwise steady beat.

If your click rate drops too much, there are not enough recorded clicks for a reliable score. The test then shows a notice instead of a result and offers no leaderboard entry, a second attempt is usually enough to fix that.

Start with 2 clicks per second, that is almost always easy to hold cleanly. Then move up to 5 and only try 8 clicks per second last, at that speed even a small slip shows up clearly in the millisecond measurement.

Measuring click rhythm: what the test actually does

The click rhythm test checks how steadily you can hold a given beat with the mouse, at three speeds from 2 to 8 clicks per second, over 15 seconds each. Unlike a plain speed test, what counts here is not how fast you click but how precisely you stay on beat while doing it.

How a run works

  1. 1 Pick a speed: 2, 5, or 8 clicks per second.
  2. 2 Click inside the game area, the first click starts the timer and sets the beat.
  3. 3 A metronome shows the rhythm for three seconds, after that you hold it from memory.
  4. 4 Keep clicking in time for 15 seconds, then the result appears.
