What tracing trains

A tight corridor with no room to spare demands fine motor control instead of broad targeting movements. It is the same skill used when cutting out an image with a pen tool, drafting in CAD, or precisely retracing a path in photo editing. The test makes visible how steady and controlled your hand holds a given line, instead of just clicking a large target.

Why millimeters instead of pixels

A pixel means something different on a 4K monitor than on an old laptop screen, and an 8 mm corridor would need a completely different pixel width depending on the display. Calibrating with a credit card translates pixels into millimeters for your specific screen, only then are corridor width and result comparable across devices.

How the score is calculated

The base value is the raw time from start to goal. Every wall touch adds 0.5 seconds of penalty time instead of ending the attempt right away, so a brief slip still lets you keep going and finish with a score. Path efficiency additionally shows how much of a detour you actually drove through the corridor: 1.00 corresponds to the ideal line.

Answers to common questions about the Mouse Maze

The attempt keeps running: a wall touch does not end it. Each connected touch counts as one fault and adds 0.5 seconds to the raw time. The spot where you left the corridor stays marked as a red dot in the maze until you restart.

That is the only unambiguous way to know when the measurement is running and when it ends. If you release the button before the goal, the attempt does not count, but you can restart it right away, no page reload needed.

It compares the distance you actually traveled to the shortest possible route through the maze (the center line). A value of 1.00 means you drove essentially exactly the ideal line. Values above that show zig-zag movement, corrections, or unnecessary detours inside the corridor.

The center line with its turns stays identical across all three variants, only the allowed deviation changes: 12 mm for Easy, 8 mm for Medium, 5 mm for Hard. That keeps the variants directly comparable: the same route, but with growing demands on precision.

The maze always renders at true millimeter size and is never scaled down, because a shrunk maze would distort the measurement. If your browser window is too narrow for that, a notice appears instead. Widening the window or using a device with a larger screen resolves it.

Mouse Maze: measuring precision under pressure

The Mouse Maze checks how confidently you guide the cursor through a tight, winding corridor without touching the walls, and how fast you can do it under time pressure. Unlike a simple click test, it demands sustained control across the whole route, not just a single hit.

What the Mouse Maze is used for

  • Fine motor control under pressure: Unlike the Steady Hand Test (a still hand at rest), the maze checks controlled movement along a line: the skill needed for drawing and retracing paths.
  • CAD & photo editing: Precisely tracing contours, whether cutting out an image with a pen tool or drawing exact lines in a CAD application, demands exactly this combination of speed and accuracy.
  • Comparing input devices: Mouse versus trackpad, or a new mouse against the old one: time, fault count, and path efficiency together show the differences more clearly than a single number.

What sets this apart from a simple target click

Most mouse tests measure a single moment: a click, a hit, a reaction. The maze instead measures the entire movement along a given route, where every second and every wall touch feeds into the score. Corridor width is calibrated to the millimeter, not fixed in pixels, so an 8 mm corridor really is 8 mm wide on every screen. When submitting to the leaderboard, the browser sends the full movement trace along, and the server independently recomputes time, faults, and path efficiency.
