Mouse Maze: measuring precision under pressure
The Mouse Maze checks how confidently you guide the cursor through a tight, winding corridor without touching the walls, and how fast you can do it under time pressure. Unlike a simple click test, it demands sustained control across the whole route, not just a single hit.
What the Mouse Maze is used for
- Fine motor control under pressure: Unlike the Steady Hand Test (a still hand at rest), the maze checks controlled movement along a line: the skill needed for drawing and retracing paths.
- CAD & photo editing: Precisely tracing contours, whether cutting out an image with a pen tool or drawing exact lines in a CAD application, demands exactly this combination of speed and accuracy.
- Comparing input devices: Mouse versus trackpad, or a new mouse against the old one: time, fault count, and path efficiency together show the differences more clearly than a single number.
How an attempt works
- 1 Press and hold the mouse button at the green start dot.
- 2 Trace the corridor to the flag, keeping the button held down the whole way.
- 3 A wall touch does not end the attempt, but costs 0.5 seconds of penalty time, and the spot stays marked in red.
- 4 Reach the goal: get a result made of raw time, penalty time, and path efficiency.
What sets this apart from a simple target click
Most mouse tests measure a single moment: a click, a hit, a reaction. The maze instead measures the entire movement along a given route, where every second and every wall touch feeds into the score. Corridor width is calibrated to the millimeter, not fixed in pixels, so an 8 mm corridor really is 8 mm wide on every screen. When submitting to the leaderboard, the browser sends the full movement trace along, and the server independently recomputes time, faults, and path efficiency.
